The G-Spot

As the Founder of Herts & Essex Fertility Centre, Michael Ah-Moye, celebrated another birthday, I thought it apt to pause and appreciate this wonderful man for a moment. Apart from the obvious, his life-giving career as a fertility specialist, creating families for so many people who struggled to conceive naturally, there is also the unseen part that most people don’t have the privilege of getting to know, the gentle soul behind the Scrubs.

Michael is such a genuine, generous and giving man that I think we can all take a leaf from his book. As a human being, he sets an amazing example for us all on how to be kind, caring and nurturing. One of his most endearing qualities is his patient care, the pride he takes in giving the best possible treatment for every patient, according to their individual needs. He would go above and beyond to find a solution to a problem even after 70+ years, which is exemplary of his excellence.

Whether Michael is looking after his patients, providing for his staff or feeding his fish on the way out, at the end of the day, he takes equal care in making sure that everyone is well.

We thought we were being generous with our birthday gift of tropical fish until we saw the spread that Michael’s sweet wife, Shirley prepared for his birthday lunch… we could have fed an army!

And speaking of an army, our very own Sergeant Major, Debbie Evans, Director of Clinical Services, Registered Nurse and Centre Manager, recently celebrated her own milestone of nursing for an outstanding 40 years! In Debbie’s nursing career she has trained hundreds of nurses, helped thousands of patients to heal and spent hundreds of thousands of hours serving her fellow human. The most selfless and generous sacrifice.

Of the seven nurses who trained together in 1982, four of them are still best of friends and shared in each other’s ups and downs over the years, which just shows you what a special breed they are. “Some might say I was always the bossy one but this trait has served me well over the last 40 years. And for anyone considering nursing as a career, I can tell you that it’s the most rewarding of professions. Just do it.”, remarked Debbie.

And while we are singing our praises to the generous bunch, we might as well throw one more superhero into the mix. Sarah Templeman, our Head of Surrogacy and Egg Donation, who went to College straight after she finished school in 1989, has been caring for people as a nurse for 33 years… Bonkers! Can you imagine what she’s seen and experienced in her lifetime? The things she was exposed to as a ‘little’ 19-year old nurse… she’s still recovering from it, I’m sure. 

But on a more serious note, what’s fascinating to know about this ‘little’ nurse is that she was instrumental in setting up our Egg Donation, Egg Sharing and Surrogacy programmes in the clinic and because of her we’ve been doing Surrogacy for more than 10 years, which makes us one of the most experienced Surrogacy clinics in the UK. I’m not bragging, I’m just saying. That’s pretty impressive generosity right there on a plate! I wonder if she realises how amazing she is and how many people she’s helped to have families of their own in her short lifetime…?

Working at this clinic has made me realise that generosity is about a mindset of abundance, to live and work with the mindset that there is more than enough for everyone, especially if we are willing to serve and share.

If we can learn to live from a place of generosity rather than fear or anxiety, scarcity or shortage, we can all collectively make this world a better place. By being more generous with our time, effort, love, attention and talents, we can all help by sharing, teaching, supporting or donating.

Have you noticed how people with generous hearts, always have more to give?

If we look at the economy, just like money and resources move through people, societies, industries and countries to make the economy grow, just like that, generosity too multiplies, flows and feeds communities, in a similar fashion. As they say, what goes around comes around.

If you have faith, you might believe that kindness is a duty or a gift but in actual fact, it’s a choice. Anyone can be generous with kindness if you choose to be.

The beauty of it is that when you give, you always gain something in return, even if it’s only a feeling of gratitude. This clinic has taught me to give from a place of generosity, which in return strengthened my feelings of gratitude. Generosity creates gratitude and gratitude generates a sense of generosity. The snowball effect. The gift that never stops giving.

And to think we can all learn to cultivate an attitude of gratitude.

When you activate gratitude and practice it in your life, you’ll notice that there is more and more to be grateful for. You will begin to live in a state of gratitude and when you live in a beautiful state like this, you have more to give. You no longer focus on what you lack or what you don’t have but instead, you’ll find ways to share your abundance.

You can’t be angry and grateful at the same time. Equally, you can’t be fearful and grateful simultaneously.

Gratitude is the antidote to anger, anxiety and fear.

We hope that together we can all be more generous and more grateful by embracing the beauty in this world and helping one another to live happier and more fulfilled lives.
