When you start looking into private IVF, one of the first questions you might have is how you’re going to pay for treatment.
The cost can feel daunting but there are different ways to fund IVF – from paying for treatment as you go to choosing a programme that can give you a clearer idea of what you’ll pay.
At Herts & Essex Fertility Centre, we work with Access Fertility and Assured Fertility to give eligible patients more choice when it comes to paying for their treatment.
Here, we talk through the options and some of the things to think about when deciding what might work best for you.
What are my options for paying for private IVF?
When it comes to paying for private IVF, there are a few different options you could consider.
Some people prefer to pay for their treatment as they go, while others like the idea of planning ahead in case they need more than one cycle.
This is where IVF funding programmes can help. Depending on the programme, you may be able to pay a fixed fee that covers multiple cycles. Some programmes also offer a refund if treatment is unsuccessful.
What works best for you will depend on your treatment and how you’d like to manage the cost.
“We know that worrying about the cost of fertility treatment can add extra pressure at an already emotional time. Having a clear idea of the options available can make things feel more manageable, while keeping the focus on finding the treatment that’s right for you.” – Sarah Templeman Clinic & Nursing Director at Herts & Essex Fertility Centre
How does Access Fertility & Assured Fertility work?
Access Fertility and Assured Fertility work with fertility clinics across the UK, including Herts & Essex Fertility Centre, to offer different ways to pay for IVF.
Rather than paying separately for each eligible treatment cycle, you may be able to choose a programme that covers multiple cycles for a fixed fee.
Some programmes also offer a refund if treatment is unsuccessful, depending on the programme and your eligibility.
Your treatment and all clinical decisions stay with your Herts & Essex team. Access Fertility & Assured Fertility simply gives eligible patients another way to pay for their treatment.
What is refundable IVF?
When you start IVF, you won’t necessarily know how many cycles you might need. A refund programme can give you a little more certainty around what you could end up paying.
You pay a fixed fee for the treatment covered by your chosen programme. If treatment is unsuccessful, you may receive some or all of that money back, depending on the programme terms.
For some people, knowing there’s the possibility of a refund can make the cost of starting treatment feel a little less daunting.
Each programme has its own eligibility criteria and terms, so make sure you understand what’s included before deciding whether it’s right for you.
What about paying for more than one IVF cycle?
You can also choose a programme that covers more than one treatment cycle.
This might appeal if you’d rather plan ahead for the possibility of needing further treatment instead of paying separately each time.
For some people, knowing what they’ll pay from the start can make planning for treatment that little bit easier.
What should I look at when comparing IVF funding options?
Cost matters but there are a few other things worth looking at before you decide.
Make sure you know exactly what’s included and whether there are any costs you’ll need to pay separately.
Some useful questions to ask include:
- What treatment is included?
- How many treatment cycles does the programme cover?
- Are frozen embryo transfers included?
- Are there any additional costs?
- Am I eligible for the programme?
- Is there a refund if treatment is unsuccessful?
- If so, how much could be refunded?
- How long does the programme last?
- What happens if my treatment plan changes?
Remember, you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Our team can talk you through your treatment plan and costs, while Access Fertility and Assured Fertility can explain its programmes and which ones you may be eligible for.
Should I choose my funding option before my treatment plan?
It can be tempting to start with the cost but the most important thing is finding the treatment that’s right for you.
A good place to start is by understanding your fertility and what treatment your specialist recommends. Once you know what your treatment might involve, it becomes easier to look at the different ways you could pay for it.
At Herts & Essex Fertility Centre, your treatment plan is built around you. During your consultation, you can talk through your fertility history, ask any questions you have and find out more about the treatment options that may be suitable.
From there, you can look at your funding options and decide what works best for you.

Paying for private IVF can feel like a lot to think about but you don’t have to have everything figured out before you get started.
Whether you decide to pay for treatment as you go or explore a programme through Access Fertility or Assured Fertility, what matters is that you understand your options and feel comfortable with your decision.
