Unfortunately, it is not always possible to find a clear reason for recurrent miscarriage. But even when investigations do not identify a specific cause, many couples can still go on to have successful pregnancies with appropriate support and care.

What tests are available after multiple miscarriages?

Ultrasound assessment
A detailed 3D ultrasound scan can assess the structure of the uterus and identify issues that may affect implantation or pregnancy development.
Blood tests
Blood tests may be used to look for conditions such as:
- Thyroid disorders
- Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)
- Thrombophilia (blood clotting conditions)
- Genetic problems (such as chromosomal rearrangements) of the male or female partner, which may lead to chromosomal rearrangements of the pregnancy, leading to miscarriages.
Genetic testing
Chromosome testing, known as karyotyping, may be recommended for one or both partners to look for genetic factors that could contribute to pregnancy loss.
How can IVF help after recurrent miscarriage?
IVF may help couples who have experienced repeated miscarriages in several ways.
Creating embryos outside the body
IVF allows eggs and sperm to be combined in the laboratory to create embryos. These embryos can then be monitored as they develop before a suitable embryo is selected for transfer.
Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A)
Some miscarriages happen because an embryo has an abnormal number of chromosomes. PGT-A is a technique that can identify certain chromosome abnormalities in embryos before transfer.
For some patients, selecting embryos without these abnormalities may help reduce the risk of miscarriage and improve the chance of achieving an ongoing pregnancy.
However, PGT-A is not suitable or recommended for everyone, and it cannot guarantee a successful pregnancy.
Preimplantation genetic testing for structural rearrangements (PGT-SR)
Some people carry a change in the structure of their chromosomes, known as a balanced chromosomal rearrangement or balanced translocation. They are usually completely healthy and may never know they have it. However, this can increase the chance of creating embryos with missing or extra chromosome material, which is a common cause of recurrent miscarriage.
PGT-SR is a specialised test performed during IVF for couples where one partner carries a balanced chromosomal rearrangement. A few cells are taken from each embryo and tested to identify embryos with the correct chromosome structure before transfer. By selecting these embryos, PGT-SR can reduce the risk of miscarriage caused by chromosome imbalance and improve the chance of a healthy pregnancy. Although PGT-SR cannot guarantee a successful pregnancy or prevent all miscarriages, it can be a valuable option for some couples with recurrent miscarriage caused by a chromosomal rearrangement.
