Female tennis players over time have expressed great difficulty balancing family ambitions with aspirations for career greatness.

However, a new empowering rule introduced by the WTA will help to dispel this conundrum from these players’ minds, encouraging them to start a family at a time that suits them.

Female tennis players who undergo fertility treatment will no longer feel pressured to rush back to the court after the WTA’s groundbreaking promise to protect their world rankings.

Any of the world’s top 750 players who wish to freeze their eggs or embryos will now be given a “special ranking” to provide additional peace of mind when planning to start a family.

Players often use the off-season to receive fertility treatment, or are forced to weigh up the dilemma of peak fertility conflicting with top sporting displays.

This new rule will not only protect the health of these sporting stars, but ease the pressure to return to competitions if not full recovered or at peak physicality.

The SER is calculated by a player’s 12 week average, spanning before and during their out-of-competition period.

However, players will be prohibited from using this ranking to enter any of the WTA premier 1000 events. These include the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open.

Who set this rule up?

This initiative was “very much at the instigation of the players”, according to WTA chief executive and Player’s Council member, Portia Archer.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Who is eligible?

The option can be taken up by any female player who is ranked within the top 750 if the time they spend outside of competition surpasses 10 weeks.

More than 320 players are also eligible for up to 12 months of paid maternity leave, which was introduced by the WTA for the first time earlier this year. All players will receive the same level of statutory maternity pay, regardless of where they rank.

What is the ‘special ranking’?

The special entry ranking will allow any eligible player undergoing treatment to enter up to three tournaments within 10 weeks of their return.

Player reactions

"Being able to have the security to take care of that, have that peace of mind and know we can come back to the tour without working our way up the rankings is such a gift." - Maddison Keys, 2025 Australian Open champion</content_rss>

If you reside in any of the listed boroughs, you might qualify for NHS-funded treatment with us. For detailed information about the process and eligibility criteria, see details for your relevant ICB.

Determining Eligibility for NHS-Funded Treatment

Understanding if you are eligible for NHS-funded fertility treatment starts with your local ICB. At Herts & Essex Fertility Centre, we partner with Mid & South Essex, North East London, and North Central London ICBs. Your eligibility is based on your GP address rather than your home address. If your local ICB has a contract with us, you can be referred for NHS-funded treatment at our clinic.

Getting a Referral for NHS-Funded Treatment

The process to get a referral for NHS-funded treatment begins with a visit to your GP. Your GP will assess your situation and arrange preliminary fertility investigations. Depending on your ICB, you might need a referral to a local NHS fertility clinic for further assessment before being referred to us. Some ICBs allow direct referrals from a GP, streamlining the process.

Cost of NHS-Funded Treatment

Routine fertility treatment at Herts & Essex Fertility Centre is fully funded by the NHS, including the cost of medication. This ensures that you receive the necessary care without worrying about additional costs.

Appointment and Treatment Timelines

The wait time for an initial appointment to discuss your treatment plan is approximately two to four weeks. We are proud to state that there is no waiting list for NHS-funded IVF treatment at our clinic. Our goal is to deliver the best possible treatment to each individual, regardless of their status.

Egg Freezing on the NHS

Egg freezing is not typically available on the NHS unless you are undergoing medical treatment that could affect your fertility, such as cancer treatment or certain Endometriosis surgeries. It's important to discuss your specific situation with your GP or ICB.

Using Donors for Treatment

If your treatment requires an egg or sperm donor, it's essential to know that gamete donors are not usually funded within the NHS partnership. You will need to discuss your options with your ICB to understand the available support.

Alternative Options for Non-Qualifying Patients

If you don’t qualify for NHS IVF funding, we offer several options to make IVF treatment more accessible. These options include reduced costs for egg and sperm sharers, multi-cycle packages, and money-back guarantee packages in collaboration with Access Fertility and Gaia, which provide insurance-backed packages.

Comprehensive Care Under One Roof

All your appointments and treatments will take place at our purpose-built clinic in Cheshunt. We ensure that every step of your fertility journey is managed under one roof, providing a seamless and supportive experience.

Our Location

Herts & Essex Fertility Centre is conveniently located in Cheshunt, at junction 25 (A10) of the M25, and is easily accessible from the M11, M1, and A12. We offer a private, barrier-controlled car park free of charge for our patients. For those travelling by train, we are just 20 minutes from Liverpool Street Station to Cheshunt Station and Theobalds Grove Station. Local buses also stop right at our doorstep.

For more detailed information and to begin your journey with us, please visit the relevant links to your ICB or contact us directly. We are here to support you every step of the way on your fertility treatment journey.</content_rss>

We celebrated National DNA Day on 25 April 2024 to commemorate significant milestones in the field of genetics. The day celebrates the discovery and understanding of DNA and the scientific advances that has been made possible as a result of it.

DNA is one of nature's most amazing wonders — a tiny molecule continually revealing surprises within the complex world it has helped to shape. Our unique DNA profiles define who we are with 20,000-25,000 genes in the human genome, each gene has a story waiting to be discovered.

We’ve even seen how it can tell expectant parents the risk of their child inheriting a certain health condition. It influences medication choices for treating illnesses and has wide-ranging applications in fields like medicine, forensics, and agriculture. Truly amazing.

Here are five important factors to consider when thinking about genetic testing, especially in the context of fertility treatment:

Purpose and Goals

Clarify why you are considering genetic testing. Are you looking to identify potential genetic disorders that could be passed on to your children? Or are you seeking to optimise fertility treatment outcomes by screening for genetic compatibility between partners? Understanding your goals will help determine which specific tests are relevant.

Types of Genetic Testing

There are different types of genetic testing available, such as carrier screening, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), and prenatal testing. Each type serves a different purpose and has its own considerations. For fertility treatment, PGT is often used to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities or specific genetic disorders before implantation.

Accuracy and Reliability

Consider the accuracy and reliability of the tests being offered. Make sure to consult with healthcare professionals or genetic counsellors who can provide information about the accuracy rates, limitations, and potential risks associated with the tests. Understanding the reliability of the tests can help manage expectations and make informed decisions.

Ethical and Emotional Considerations

Genetic testing can uncover information that may have significant emotional and ethical implications. Consider how you and your partner feel about the potential results and how you would handle different outcomes. It's essential to have open and honest discussions with your partner, as well as with healthcare providers, about the possible scenarios and decisions that may arise from the testing.

Cost and Insurance Coverage

Genetic testing can be expensive, and insurance coverage may vary depending on the type of testing and your location. Before proceeding with testing, it's important to understand the costs involved and whether your insurance will cover some or all of the expenses. Financial considerations may influence your decision-making process, so be sure to explore all options and resources available to you.

By considering these factors, you can make informed decisions about genetic testing as part of your fertility treatment, ensuring that you are equipped with the necessary information and support throughout the process. If you would like to learn more about genetic testing in relation to fertility treatment, please feel free to contact our helpful embryology team on 01992 78 50 60.

Whether you're a donor or from a donor-conceived family, you can find detailed answers to all your questions in this helpful FAQ.

Q: What is the likelihood I will be contacted?

A: Lots of factors will determine if a child conceived by donation will reach out to their donor. A really important factor will be how the donor-conceived person has processed the information regarding the nature of their conception. You will also need to remember that there is a possibility that the family has not (yet) disclosed to the person that they are donor-conceived. Circumstances will vary from family to family. Each donor-conceived person is an individual, but once the first cohorts of donor-conceived people with identity release donors turn eighteen (from October 2023), the HFEA will be able to provide information on how many donor-conceived people have requested identifying information.

It is worth noting that even though contact may not happen as soon as the donor-conceived person turns 18, it could still happen at any point in the succeeding years. We know from research that key milestones in life – such as becoming a parent - or the experience of health concerns can be a prompt for seeking contact. You should not expect that every donor-conceived person will ask for contact. For example, you may have helped 10 families and received no contact requests, but others may have helped five families and have multiple requests.

It's LGBT+ History Month in February and it's an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history, and the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements.

The overall aim of LGBT+ History month is to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public.

This is done by:

Increasing the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (“LGBT+”) people, their history, lives, and their experiences in the curriculum and culture of educational and other institutions, and the wider community;

Raising awareness and advancing education on matters affecting the LGBT+ community;

Working to make educational and other institutions safe spaces for all LGBT+ communities; and

Promoting the welfare of LGBT+ people, by ensuring that the education system recognises and enables LGBT+ people to achieve their full potential, so they contribute fully to society and lead fulfilled lives, thus benefiting society as a whole.

LGBT+ History Month is for everyone; whether you work in education, a museum, a library, or art gallery, a business, a service, are a member of a network/social group or an individual.

It is celebrated every February across the UK and was founded in 2004 by Schools OUT co-chairs, Paul Patrick & Professor Emeritus Sue Sanders. It was first celebrated in February 2005.

Every year Schools OUT sets a different theme for LGBT+ History Month and provides free resources for education settings, businesses, services and organisations to help them celebrate and 'usualise' LGBT+ lives in their full diversity.

Even the Church of England has backed proposals to allow prayers of blessing for same-sex couples as announced on 09/02/2023. So the world is finally changing, accepting, and embracing the LGBT community… slowly but surely.

<featured_image>https://hertsandessexfertility.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Girls-on-stand-1.jpeg</featured_image><content_rss>The Modern Family Show 2022 was hosted in London for the second year running at the start of Autumn on 10 September 2022 and although it took place a mere two days after Her Majesty the Queen had sadly passed away, it was a huge success.

The Modern Family Show designed by TwoDadsUK is the only LGBTQ-friendly family creation event of its kind in the UK and this year, for the first time, the show is also running in San Francisco, USA on 29 October 2022 and in Sydney, Australia on 29 April 2023.

The founders, Michael and Wes Johnson-Ellis, known as TwoDadsUK, Dads via UK Surrogacy, and the wider team are all passionate about raising awareness and driving change. And that’s exactly what attracted us to them, right from the start - their core values of trust, integrity, equality, and honesty are 100% in line with our own values.

The great thing about the show is that it provides people with resources, expert advice, support, and a safe space to talk in private as part of their open surgery service. They basically support the most exciting journey of people’s lives by ensuring they’re better informed whilst being treated with the respect they deserve.

They've designed The Modern Family Show to not only look and feel different but to deliver an event that will help people get the necessary information to understand the options available to them, ahead of their family-building journey.

It’s a show like no other, designed to safely guide and support the LGBTQ+ community to educate them about all aspects of Surrogacy, IVF, IUI, Adoption, Fostering, Co-Parenting, Fertility Assessments, Fertility Preservation, Solo Parenting, Egg Donation and Sperm Donation.

Not only are the attendees treated like VIPs, but the exhibitors, speakers, helpers, and advocates are all treated so kindly that you truly feel part of a circle of friends. From the welcome drinks to the exhibitor lounge with breakfast, lunch, and drinks on tap and happy hour at the end of the day, you’re pretty much carried on a silver platter throughout the day in true Mike and Wes style.

In addition to our Herts & Essex Fertility Stand in the exhibition hall, our Head of Surrogacy, Sarah Templeman delivered a presentation on The Surrogacy Journey, she was a panelist on a panel discussion titled UK Surrogacy for Beginners, and Debbie Evans, our Director of Clinical Services, also participated in a panel on How to Select the Right Clinic.

It’s an event designed for everyone. Inclusivity is key so everyone is welcome. A show that educates in a dedicated space with professionals, community members, and allies. Their exclusive and impressive Main Stage delivered informal educational sessions from some of the leading experts in the fertility industry and a few familiar faces from the LGBTQ+ community.

The Modern Family Show has assembled a collection of social media parenting influencers (their advocates) to act as the voice for their chosen family group and wider parenting community as part of the #AskMe program. Their advocates are all parents or parents to be, and whether that’s as a result of Fostering, Adoption, Trans-Parents, Co-parenting, Surrogacy, or Sperm/Egg donation, they were there to answer questions, engage with the audience and give advice from their own lived experiences. What a brilliant initiative.

As the UK Fertility Clinic Sponsor for the second year running, we had such a good time at this event and with so many good conversations with people at different stages of their family-building journey, we have signed up for a third consecutive year and look forward to seeing more expecting parents at The Modern Family Show in London on Saturday 23 September 2023.
