Harmony prenatal test

What is the Harmony prenatal test?

It’s important to remember that the majority of babies are born healthy and well, but if you are pregnant and anxious about the health and wellbeing of your baby it is now possible to test for common chromosomal disorders.  The Harmony prenatal test is a highly accurate, non-invasive screening blood test which can be performed at any time after 10 weeks into your pregnancy. The conditions it tests for include:

  • Trisomy 21 (Down’s syndrome) is the most common trisomy at the time of birth. It is associated with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities and may also lead to digestive disease, congenital heart defects and other malformations.

  • Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome) are associated with a high rate of miscarriage. These babies are born with severe brain abnormalities and often have congenital heart defects.

Additional conditions it tests for are sex chromosome disorders, with either missing or extra sex chromosomes, including:

  • Turner syndrome (XO)
  • Klinefelter syndrome (XXY)
  • Jacob’s syndrome (XYY)
  • Triple X syndrome (XXX)

What is the Harmony prenatal test?

The test will be able to determine the sex of the baby. This may not be possible in twin pregnancies. Of course, we will not reveal the sex for those patients who do not wish to know.

How is the test carried out?

During pregnancy, cell free genetic material (DNA) from the baby is detectable in the mother’s bloodstream. This allows the Harmony test to sequence the DNA for both mother and baby via a simple, non-invasive maternal blood test, which is safe for you, your pregnancy and your baby. It is also important that you have an ultrasound scan before your blood test to confirm your pregnancy is over 10 weeks, and to check whether you are carrying more than one baby.

Is the test right for me?

Anyone who wants some extra reassurance about the progression of their pregnancy and the development of their baby can ask us to carry out the Harmony. It can be performed on singleton and twin pregnancies, and on women who have conceived spontaneously, as well as through using IVF and assisted reproductive technology (ART), including if you have conceived using donor eggs or sperm, or if you are having a child later in life.

How accurate is the Harmony prenatal test?

Scientifically, the Harmony test has been shown to be the most sensitive and accurate prenatal screening test available, being over 99% accurate in identifying Down’s syndrome. It can be carried out at any time from 10 weeks into your pregnancy, offering you the peace-of-mind that comes from knowing an early and highly-accurate result.

How long will I wait for the results?

Once we have conducted the blood test, it will be sent for analysis to a specialist laboratory where the test was developed. Your results are available 7-14 days after your test. An appointment will be booked to discuss the results with a consultant.

How much does the test cost?

The Harmony prenatal test costs £555.00 and is available to anyone, whether you’ve had successful treatment with us, at another clinic, or if you have conceived naturally.
