Have you ever wondered if your embryos might need a little helping hand to implant?
Embryo Glue has been specifically designed with this question in mind. Manufactured by Vitrolife a Swedish company, Embryo Glue is a culture media developed specifically for embryo transfer. Enriched with carbohydrates and amino acids to support the embryo during the transfer procedure, it can assist implantation and increase the chance of a successful pregnancy.
How does it work?
Embryo Glue is a viscous (thick) solution containing high concentrations of an adherence (sticky) compound called Hyaluronan. Adherence of the embryo to the lining inside the womb will aid implantation. Hyaluronan is naturally present in the fluid in both the ovaries and the womb, and the level is known to rise in the womb at the time of embryo implantation.
The exact mechanism by which Hyaluronan promotes implantation has not yet been identified, however scientists believe that it assists implantation by:
- Improving cell to cell contact between the implanting embryo and the lining of the womb
- The breakdown of Hyaluronan is known to promote blood vessel development which will increase blood flow to the developing embryo
- Mimics the natural secretions from the womb to help the embryo during the transfer from culture media to the lining of the womb
- Hyaluronan binds to a receptor present on both the surface of the developing embryo and in the lining of the womb
Is it suitable for me?
Embryo Glue can be used for the transfer of cleavage stage embryos and blastocysts in both fresh and frozen cycles and can therefore benefit any patient undergoing IVF treatment. Studies have demonstrated that Embryo Glue is particularly beneficial for patients who are over 35 years old, patients with a history of failed implantation and for patients with unexplained infertility.
Is it safe to use?
Embryo Glue is not a glue, but a specialised culture media used to help embryo implantation. Embryo Glue is a CE marked product that has undergone stringent quality control tests by the manufacturer before being released for clinical use to ensure that it will not harm embryos. Extensive clinical trials have ensured that the product is safe for use.
Is there any data to prove it?
The large scale trial in Japan with almost 3000 patients, demonstrated a pregnancy rate of 41.2% in patients using Embryo Glue compared to 34.1% in the control group who did not use the culture media.
A literature study by the independent research institute the Cochrane Collaboration who reviewed many published studies on Embryo Glue has also concluded an observed increase in implantation rate when using Embryo Glue.
Our most recent data at Herts & Essex Fertility Centre demonstrates a pregnancy rate of 55.1% for patients who used Embryo Glue. We are very pleased to report ongoing clinical pregnancies in our patients who have had several previously unsuccessful cycles following treatment with us.
